Three thousand sailors are in New Orleans for Navy Week, marking the start of the nation’s bicentennial of the War of 1812. Some seeing the city for the first time will be getting pointers from sailors coming home for the celebrations.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The U.S. Navy is kicking off its celebration of the War of 1812 in New Orleans in a big way.

The event, which is the first of four years of festivities around the nation, begins Tuesday with a parade of tall ships and modern Navy ships sailing up the Mississippi River into the Port of New Orleans

A 21-gun salute fired by the National Guard's Washington Artillery at the old Navy pier in Algiers will welcome them.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Nine ships, including three tall military sailing ships, will adorn the Mississippi River in New Orleans this week as the nation kicks off the bicentennial commemoration of the War of 1812.

The ships are scheduled to arrive on Tuesday afternoon. There will be three U.S. Navy warships, three international warships and the sailing ships, including the Coast Guard's Cutter Eagle. The public can visit the ships for free between Wednesday and Sunday.

Thousands of people are expected to visit New Orleans next month for Navy Week. It’s the start of events across the country to mark the bicentennial of the War of 1812.
