French Quarter Street Improvements Completed

A joint effort between the state of Louisiana and the city of New Orleans has completed $11.3 million in street and sidewalk improvements in the French Quarter.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development said in a Friday release that the work in New Orleans' tourist heartland was mostly completed in December, although some minor items remain.

Parts of eight streets were paved with new asphalt, curbs and sidewalks were repaired and wheelchair ramps were installed. Street names are being set in New Orleans' trademark blue-and-white tiles at corners.

Judge calls Newcomb Boulevard fence illegal; residents’ attorney vows to appeal ruling

A drawn-out battle over the right to gate a public street reached a milestone Tuesday when a Civil Court judge ruled in favor of keeping Newcomb Boulevard open.

Residents of Newcomb Boulevard, a ritzy Uptown neighborhood parallel to even ritzier Audubon Place, in 2006 got the go-ahead from the city’s Department of Public Works to block the Freret Street end of the block that runs to St. Charles Avenue.
