High School Leaders at Odds Over Football Playoffs

Louisiana's high schools leaders are clashing over new plans for football playoffs.

A decision by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association will separate traditional public school football playoffs from those held by private, magnet and charter schools.

Public school principals who pushed the separation told lawmakers Tuesday that the other schools have unfair rules that allow them to cherry-pick the kinds of students — and football players — they take.

Plenty Of Magic In The Arena, But None For The Hornets: Orlando Wins 105-102

Tonight’s Hornets game against the Orlando Magic at the New Orleans Arena proceeded like you might expect between two young teams with dismal records — a back-and-forth contest with long scoreless stretches by each club, sloppy turnovers, 41 combined fouls and other attendant miseries.

There was a lot of everything tonight, but the Magic had a little more of it. They won, 105-102.

Hornets Sign Henry Sims to 10-Day Contract

The New Orleans Hornets announced the signing of center-forward Henry Sims to a 10-day contract yesterday.

The Hornets have been light on big men, with Anthony Davis out for two games with a shoulder injury, and are now without reserve forward Jason Smith. Smith will undergo surgery for a torn labrum in his right shoulder and will be out for the rest of the season.

Sims is an undrafted rookie out of Georgetown. He was signed by the Knicks on a short-term contract during the preseason, but released just over a month later.

Vasquez leads Hornets past Pistons, 100-95

Greivis Vasquez capped a 25-point, nine-assist performance by hitting a running floater off the backboard with 12 seconds left, and the New Orleans Hornets beat the Detroit Pistons 100-95 on Friday night to snap a two-game skid.

Eric Gordon added 21 points and Ryan Anderson 19 points and 13 rebounds for the Hornets, who were short-handed in the front court with starting forward Anthony Davis sitting out his second straight game because of a sprained left shoulder.

Hornets' Smith Out for Season with Shoulder Injury

New Orleans Hornets general manager Dell Demps says 7-foot reserve forward and center Jason Smith will miss the rest of the season because of a torn labrum in his right shoulder.

Meanwhile, the Hornets also say rookie forward Anthony Davis will be out for Friday night's game against the Detroit Pistons because of a left shoulder sprain which occurred Tuesday night against New Jersey and also sidelined him Wednesday night at Oklahoma City. Davis will be listed as day-to-day.

After a shaky start to their season, the University of New Orleans baseball team has still been unable to get on the right track.

The Privateers are still searching for their first win of the season after being swept in a road series against the South Alabama Jaguars over the weekend and dropping a game against the Tulane Green Wave Wednesday.

Durant Gets Triple-Double in 119-74 Thunder Rout of Hornets

Russell Westbrook scored 29 points, Kevin Durant recorded his third career triple-double and the Oklahoma City Thunder finished a perfect three-game homestand by routing the short-handed New Orleans Hornets 119-74 on Wednesday night.

Durant had 18 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists as Oklahoma City finished a dominant four-game sweep of the season series against New Orleans, which was without starters Anthony Davis (shoulder) and Eric Gordon (knee). The Thunder led by at least 29 in three of the four meetings this season,

Brooklyn Nets Outshoot Hornets 101-97

Deron Williams scored 33 points and the Brooklyn Nets made 12 three-point shots on their way to a 101-97 victory over the New Orleans Hornets Tuesday night at the New Orleans Arena.

The Hornets, who shot only 39.5 percent over the first two quarters and were down by as many as 22 points late in the second quarter, rallied in the second half of the game. New Orleans shooters knocked down 52.3 percent of their shots in the second half, and outscored their opponents 56-44 while trying to regain the advantage.

Hornets Fight Hard But Lose To Mavericks 104-100

The New Orleans Hornets took a four point lead into the final minute of Friday night’s game against the Dallas Mavericks at the New Orleans Arena but couldn’t close, losing 104-100.

The teams exchanged the lead five times in the final period, but New Orleans seemed all but destined to put it away after Ryan Anderson’s 25-foot 3-pointer hit nothing but net with 55 seconds to play, putting the Hornets up 100-96 and sending the crowd into a frenzy for their home team and the free french fries.

Dameron Named Defensive Coordinator at La. Tech

Louisiana Tech has named Kim Dameron as the team's defensive coordinator.

Coach Skip Holtz said Tuesday Dameron brings 14 years of experience in that role to the Bulldogs' program.

Dameron joins Tech after spending two years at Cornell, serving as safeties coach and defensive coordinator. He also spent three seasons with Ole Miss as safeties coach and saw two of his players drafted by the NFL. Prior to that, he served as defensive coordinator at Louisiana-Monroe, Stephen F. Austin, Eastern Illinois and Cincinnati.
