Union to gauge morale of New Orleans cops

The New Orleans police union is launching a study of officer morale and confidence in strategies of the department.

The Times-Picayune reports Capt. Michael Glasser, head of the Police Association of New Orleans, said the survey will highlight issues facing rank-and-file officers and help pinpoint matters that need to be addressed.

Glasser said Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas and his administration have dismissed officers' concerns, ranging from rising crime and questionable practices to failing crime-fighting strategies and management deficiencies.

New Orleans Police to conduct DWI checkpoint tonight

The New Orleans Police Department's traffic division will conduct a sobriety checkpoint tonight in the "Uptown area," the department said in a news release.

The checkpoint will begin at approximately 9 p.m., and last until about 5 a.m. Friday morning. In addition to a lack of alcohol, police are advising motorists to have proper documentation if stopped, including proof of insurance and a driver's license.

"I would like to remind all drivers to always drink responsibly and use a designated driver," Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas said in the release.

NOPD to conduct DWI Checkpoint tonight

The New Orleans Police Department's Traffic Division will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint in the Tremé, beginning at about 9 p.m. tonight and continuing until about 5 a.m. Saturday morning.

The department says motorists will experience minimal delays, and should be prepared to show proper documentation to officers if stopped, including a driver's license and proof of insurance.

"I would like to remind all drivers to always drink responsibly and to use a designated driver," said Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas.

2 Adults, 1 Child Killed in New Orleans Shootings

A day of sporadic gun violence in New Orleans, including an evening rush-hour shooting near a major thoroughfare, has left two adults and one child dead.

The latest police report indicated the child, a girl, was 5 years old. She was among those hit in the rush hour shooting in New Orleans' Central City neighborhood. Police said a 33-year-old woman also was killed. Three others, including a 10-year-old boy and two men were hit but their injuries were not believed life threatening. At least one man was seen firing a weapon. No suspects had been arrested as of Tuesday night.

Man falls into canal, apparently drowns

New Orleans police say a 29-year-old man died after falling into a canal near Irish Bayou in New Orleans East.

Officer Garry Flot, a police spokesman, says the body of Harold Johnson of New Orleans was found Sunday afternoon, near the spot where he fell in earlier that day.

Flot says said the death will be listed as unclassified until an autopsy.
