Work to reset concrete barrier walls along Interstate 10 in Jefferson Parish will cause periodic lane closures Sunday and Monday.

State transportation officials say the highway's left eastbound lane between the Veterans Memorial Boulevard and Clearview Parkway exits will be closed on Sunday at 9:30 p.m. and remain closed until 2 a.m. on Monday.

The highway's westbound left lane between the Clearview Parkway and Transcontinental Drive exits will be closed from 12-5:30 a.m. on Monday.

Work to widen Interstates 10 and 12 in East Baton Rouge and Livingston parishes has resumed.

The state Department of Transportation and Development had suspended construction on the interstates as Hurricane Isaac approached last week to speed evacuation and help emergency workers.

With activities beginning to return to normal, DOTD said Wednesday that it had instructed construction contractors to resume work.

The widening project is expected to be complete by mid-2013.

The state is preparing to spend millions of dollars repaving Interstate 10 in Kenner and the Airport Access Road.

The Times-Picayune reports Barriere Construction Co. this week entered the only bid to overlay the highway between the St. Charles Parish line and Williams Boulevard.

Barriere's bid — almost $4.8 million — came in about $500,000 above the state's Department of Transportation and Development estimate of almost $4.2 million.

Construction usually begins two to four months after bids are opened.

Two people were killed and more than 60 injured in a pre-dawn multi-vehicle pileup in New Orleans East that shut down a busy stretch of the I-10 for most of the day. Drivers say heavy fog covered the area.

Louisiana officials are investigating what triggered the 40-car pile-up that closed Interstate 10 and left dozens critically injured. A responding tow truck driver says he heard screams from people pleading for help.
