Gretna Changes Water Payment Rules

The Gretna City Council has revamped rules for customers seeking to avoid disconnection of water service and created guidelines to help in hardship cases.

The Times-Picayune reports the revisions give residents 15 days after a second delinquent notice to pay bills or negotiate an arrangement with the water department to do so.

Councilman Vincent Cox says he worked with city administrators on the changes after a constituent, who had lost his job, was cut off from water service.

Judge Declares Mistrial in Gretna Murder Case

A state judge declared a mistrial after defense attorneys provided evidence they say supports their client's alibi.

The Times-Picayune reports 28-year-old Derrick Francois has claimed he was in Mississippi when Gretna police say he barged into a home in April 2011 and shot Chandrick Harris in the head.

Francois's defense attorneys say that only this week they've gotten paycheck stubs that back their client's claim that he was working in Pascagoula when Harris was killed.

Gretna Crime Drops 13 Percent in 2012

Overall crime in Gretna decreased 13 percent last year.

The Times-Picayune reports Police Chief Arthur Lawson told the city council Wednesday night that no murders were reported in 2012 and declines were recorded in all categories of crime except thefts, which registered a slight bump.

Lawson said the department logged a 12 percent rise in arrests. He says officers are assigned small patrol beats which allow them to pass through an area repeatedly and catch criminals in the act, which happens often.

Woman sentenced for having sex with boy

A New Orleans woman was ordered to serve two years of probation for her conviction of having sex with a 14-year-old boy in Gretna two years ago.

The Times-Picayune reports 33-year-old Kendra Greenwald eluded prison time for her July 12 conviction of carnal knowledge of a juvenile, in connection with the June 10, 2010 encounter.

The boy's mother alerted police after learning her son had sex with Greenwald. Greenwald contends the boy, now 16, forced her to have sex by threatening her and to harm her child.
