Patrons Grabbed Gunman After Club Shooting

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans police say nightclub patrons grabbed a man after he shot another patron and they held him until officers arrived. Police say 25-year-old Marcos Tulio Montes was booked in the death of an unidentified man yesterday morning at the Mimosa Dancing Club in eastern New Orleans.

One OPP escapee still being sought after slipping under fence Saturday night

One of two inmates who escaped from Orleans Parish Prison Saturday is back in custody, though authorities were still searching for the other earlier today, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Sherrick Brumfield, 27, who was awaiting trial on second degree battery charges, remains free.   Reginald Young, 22, was being held on armed robbery, kidnapping, and other charges. Young surrendered to authorities at 2:13 a.m. Sunday.

New Orleans police to hold gun buyback in May

The New Orleans Police crime prevention unit will be buying guns from residents — no questions asked — on May 12.

Police will pay $75 cash for handguns and $200 cash for assault rifles. The weapons can be new or old. Damaged guns will also be accepted.

Those looking to get rid of guns are advised to bring them unloaded and in a bag or container to the event. Police ask that people don't handle the weapons at the event and bring ammunition in separate containers.

Grand Caillou fire chief on paid leave

GRAND CAILLOU, La. — The Grand Caillou fire chief is on paid leave following his indictment on a sex charge.

The Courier (http://bit.ly/IbS5Fw ) reports that 61-year-old Michael Deroche Sr was charged with sexual battery following allegations of performing inappropriate acts on a community service worker at one of the fire stations last year. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison.

Deroche was never arrested, but an investigation was done by the Terrebonne Sheriff's Office.

Deroche has denied the allegations.

N.O. man arrested on identify theft, fraud charges

A New Orleans man has been arrested on fraud and identity theft charges for allegedly engaging in a scheme to defraud the PayPal online payments service.

Federal prosecutors said Friday's arrest of 28-year-old Giray Biyikioglu, a Turkish national who lives in New Orleans, follows a Secret Service probe.

Prosecutors said Biyikioglu illegally used somebody else's identity and conducted transactions of up to $190,000 as part of his alleged scheme to defraud.

No additional details about the case were immediately disclosed.

Engineer Arrested, Feds Probe BP's Spill Response

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — By arresting a former BP engineer, federal prosecutors are showing their hand in the Gulf oil spill case. They have been probing whether BP PLC and its employees broke the law by intentionally lowballing how much oil was spewing from its out-of-control well. The arrest came two years and four days after the drilling-rig explosion.
