West bank bound lanes on the Huey P. Long Bridge in Jefferson Parish are closed until 5 a.m. on Monday while workers place girders for wider lanes.

State officials are urging motorists to use the Crescent City Connection in New Orleans or the Interstate 310 Bridge in Lulling as alternate crossings of the Mississippi River.

The Huey P. Long Bridge widening project will include three 11-foot lanes in each direction. The total width, including shoulders, will more than double from the current driving surface.

Completion is projected for 2013.

Construction delays on Nicholls State University's football stadium might mean problems for the school's first home game.

Mike Davis, director of facilities, told The Daily Comet that the local contractor, BET Construction, has been doing a "super job" building the Nicholls stadium's elevator shaft and updating the building's facade. But the company that provides the elevator car itself has said it won't be able to get it to the construction site until about Sept. 1.

It could then take six weeks to finish the work.

Nicholls first home game is Sept. 22.

Swedish developer Skanska and joint venture partner MAPP Construction, a Baton Rouge-based construction firm, have secured the second piece of the state contract for the new University Medical Center in New Orleans. Skanska said the second portion of the contract is for $130 million and Skanska's share is $118 million.

Construction of four new schoolhouses should be completed as classes resume in August, education officials announced Wednesday night, but modular buildings are ready just in case.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Tulane University's plans to construct a new football stadium in New Orleans' Uptown neighborhood are drawing opposition from some residents. Opponents of the stadium say they believe it will add to traffic and parking problems.
