Tulane Police Training To Handle Mass Casualty Events

Tulane University police officers are getting special training this week from on-campus experts in first aid. The sessions are focused on handing an active shooter or something resulting in mass casualties.

There are 100 sworn personnel in TUPD -- the second largest department behind the New Orleans Police Department.

About 80 are getting special training this week on handling first aid in major events.

Police Superintendent Jon Barnwell:

“It’s a wonderful skill set to have in your tool box as a resource, and we hope we never have to use it,” he sid.

Barnwell says Tulane University experts are leading the sessions. Officers are learning how to put pressure on wounds to stem bleeding before medical personnel arrive.

“Being fortunate to have these subject-matter experts on our campus is going to allow us to bring our life-saving capabilities to even higher levels," he said. " With police officers being the immediate first responders there’s always an opportunity where seconds could mean life or death.”

The course was developed by the U.S. Departments of Homeland Security and Health and Human Services.
