Last month, heroin made headlines when actor Philip Seymour Hoffman died from an accidental overdose that included heroin, cocaine, benzodiazepines and amphetamine.
But the popularity of the drug has been rising across the country in states like New Hampshire for the last two to three years, says Col. Bob Quinn, director of New Hampshire’s Division of State Police.
According to the Federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, heroin use has doubled amongst people 12 and older between 2007 and 2012.
Quinn says the increase in the use of the powder form of the drug in the past few years has caused a ripple effect in New Hampshire’s law enforcement system. Crime is up in the state from driving under the influence to petty theft.
