On Tuesday morning interim police superintendent Michael Harrison welcomed the latest class of New Orleans Police Department recruits on their first day of training at the police academy. There are 32 recruits in this class. Twenty-two of the cadets are from the New Orleans metro area and seven are from out of state. The class is expected to graduate early next year.
“Early this morning Chief Bardy, Chief Albert and I met and welcomed each recruit as they walked through these doors. It’s important to me that they know that the senior leadership of this organization wants them to succeed," Harrison said.
"These men and women are joining NOPD at a very critical time in the city’s history. Now more than ever public safety is our top priority. We are investing in our officers and we are committed to higher standards. We are aggressively recruiting the best and the brightest to get behind the badge. And we will continue to recruit and hire more officers until we reach our goal of 1,600,” he continued.
Mayor Mitch Landrieu and City Councilmember James Gray were also on hand to greet the recruits. This is the second class to begin training in 2014. The first began in May and will graduate in November.
