NOPD Offering Counseling After Second Officer Dies In The Line Of Duty

New Orleans police are again planning a funeral for an officer killed in the line of duty.

Officer Vernell Brown has died from injuries sustained when he was hit by a car on Interstate 10 while investigating a car fire.

Last month, officer Daryle Holloway was shot while driving a suspect to jail.

Brown had been in a coma after the highway crash. Superintendent Michael Harrison announced his death over the weekend.

He says steps are being taken to help the department deal with the loss.

“When we were informed of his death it really kind of hit home. So we're making sure our officers have what they need, making sure resources available to deal with their mental health, their mental state, that we're all capable and ready and willing to continue working. And those who need to speak with a chaplain or our police psychologist, we're making that available to all of the members of the department. More especially to the members of the Sixth District where he worked.”

Brown was a 17-year veteran of the force. No word yet on details of his funeral.
