Newhouse Says Times-Picayune Not For Sale
Plans to continue the New Orleans Times-Picayune as a daily newspaper have taken a blow from its publisher. Advance Publications says it has no intentions of selling the paper.
Advance Publications President Donald Newhouse says plans will continue to cut print copies to three editions a week. Some prominent New Orleans residents, including Wynton Marsalis and James Carville, signed a letter asking the company to sell the paper to a concern that would keep it a daily operation.
Newhouse said the letter was read with “great respect and concern,” but the paper is not for sale. This comes as fundraising efforts are stepping up to help some of the 200 employees who will be out of work. Details are available at DashThirtyDash.org – named after the newsroom shorthand for the end of a story.
Cutbacks at the paper are set to take effect at the end of September.
