Job Fair Draws Applicants For Tourism Industry

A pop-up job fair drew more than 125 people seeking work in the tourism industry. The event also highlighted a new venue – the New Orleans Jazz Market in Central City.

New Orleans City Councilwoman LaToya Cantrell sponsored the Flash Career Fair, along with the city Convention and Visitors Bureau and Tourism Marketing Corporation.

Anna Nguyen is the outreach and communications fellow at Cantrell’s council office. The Flash fair was designed to be small and casual.

“We wanted to provide a job fair where people could just walk in, very comfortably get to know the employers and kind of talk about what’s available and how to possibly work for that employer," she said.

There were 13 companies represented, such Hyatt, Walk-ons restaurant and Uber.

One job seeker was 29-year-old Angelo Jackson of New Orleans, an Amy veteran who served in Afghanistan.

“I got eight years’ cooking experience—six in the military and two in civilian side. I’m able to work in any condition in any volume restaurant – short order, buffet style or cafeteria style,”  he said.

Another job fair will be held tomorrow. Several New Orleans agencies will be on hand to outline openings. They include jobs at the police, fire and recreation departments, sewerage and water board and regional transit. It’s planned at the Rosa F. Keller Library from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
