Former New Orleans Health Commissioner Has Advice To Health Care Signups

Enrollment is now open for people to sign up for health care under the Affordable Care Act. Former New Orleans Health Commissioner Dr. Karen DeSalvo talks about goals for the phase now under way.

Dr. DeSalvo is now acting assistant secretary for health at the U-S Department of Health and Human Services. And she’s bringing a message nationwide for communities to make sure their neighbors get coverage.

“We want to particularly remind the community – everybody – that even if you have insurance, take a look to your left and your right," she said. "Think about your family, you’ve got your friends, the people you love. And think about whether you want to help direct them to healthcare.gov.”

DeSalvo says the website has been streamlined and improved since its rocky unveiling.

People who have health insurance through the Affordable Care Act can make changes to coverage through December 15th. Those who are new to the system have until February 15th to sign up.
