As much of the nation recovers from the frenzied pace of the holiday season, New Orleans is revving up for more parties. This year’s Carnival season also has a major intermission event.
New Orleans officials and parade organizers are marking the start of Mardi Gras season with servings of traditional king cake. This year the Carnival season is being split into two parts to accommodate the Super Bowl on February 3.
Mayor Mitch Landrieu has been pushing improvement projects to start wrapping up in time for visitors. French Quarter sidewalks and streets have been fixed. A new streetcar line is set to start. Taxis have new, higher standards being imposed.
The parade season will then pick back up and build to Fat Tuesday, when the city virtually stops for parties that wrap up February 12.
