Auto industry groups are advising consumers to be extra cautious when buying cars in Louisiana. The state estimates at least 100,000 vehicles flooded last month.
Tens of thousands of flooded-out cars were towed away from flood zones. But many didn’t go far.
They may look OK on the outside.
But, CarFax spokesman Chris Basso says it’s really important now – after the August floods -- to check a car very closely.
“Louisiana ranks in the top ten for states with the most flooded vehicles that are back in use," he said, "and that has resulted in 9,000 vehicles being put back into use on the road and in people’s driveways right now.”
Basso says three steps are important.
“The test drive, checking the vehicle’s history and having the trained eye of a mechanic inspect that vehicle,” he said.
DMV.org advises a quick test of the electrical system by turning on all the elements – radio, air conditioner, windows.
CarFax and DMV.org will run the vehicle information number to check for registrations in flood zones.
