The fashion designer Gianni Versace was gunned down on the front steps of his home in Miami Beach, Florida, on July 15, 1997. The man who murdered him had killed four other men in the previous months. But police mishandled the investigation and failed to find him before he targeted Versace.

The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” the latest season of “American Crime Story,” premiered on FX earlier this month, and the third episode airs Wednesday night. Here & Now‘s Jeremy Hobson speaks with Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, the show’s executive producers.
