Volunteer at WWNO

WWNO relies on our volunteers—dedicated people who undertake a variety of duties, in our administrative office and in radio operations, and as representatives at events in New Orleans and throughout Southeast Louisiana.

Throughout our history, WWNO volunteers have been essential to our success, and donating your time is a great way to show your support for public broadcasting while really making a difference. You’ll enjoy the satisfaction of helping to broadcast some of the best radio in America, while also getting the opportunity to meet other fun and interesting people who enjoy public radio.

Our volunteers are part of the nation’s public radio community—from NPR reporters around the world, to announcers and engineers spread out across the United States at stations just like WWNO. And you’ll be among the first to enjoy tickets and special offers that come our way.

WWNO volunteers keep the station running—and the station's staff greatly appreciates our volunteers’ generous contribution of time, effort, and enthusiasm!

Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities

Year-round opportunities are available in the administrative office, and in the membership and development office. Responsibilities include manning the reception desk and answering telephones, filing, word processing, helping with mailings, some promotional writing, and other special projects.

Membership Data Entry

Growing our membership means recording and updating our membership and gift records. We are updating information about listening preferences to serve members better too. Year-round and seasonal opportunities are available. Data entry volunteers must have the ability to handle confidential information with discretion, and will be required to train in the use of our specialized database. (Of course, we'll provide the training.)

Membership Drives

Volunteers are vital during WWNO’s spring and fall membership drives. Volunteers answer phones and take pledges from callers, and create lasting first impressions that strengthen the ties between listeners and the station. Volunteers also help with various special tasks during the drives—transportation help is often needed—as well as pre- and post-drive mailings and fulfillment of thank-you gift requests.

Companies and organizations are also encouraged to come in as a pledge group, in exchange for on-air credit. Some of the benefits of participating include verbal acknowledgements, camera pans of the volunteers, table signs, and an on-air graphic slide.

If you are a restaurant owner or food vendor that loves public radio, you can support our fund drives and promote your business by feeding volunteers and staff during the drive! Food donors receive recognition on-air during the drive and valuable underwriting announcements during our regular programming.

WWNO Community Events

WWNO staff enjoy appearing at performances and community events, but there are more opportunities than we can handle! Volunteers help us to represent the station at events by distributing literature, answering questions, and listening to comments and suggestions. Volunteers are our ambassadors!  Community events volunteers should have an outgoing, friendly manner, and be able to talk enthusiastically about WWNO. We’ll teach you all the things you’ll need to know to answer questions and be great at public outreach!
