When we talk about big events in New Orleans we typically say “Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest.”

Economically, though, if we’re going to bracket two events, we should say “Mardi Gras and French Quarter Festival.” French Quarter Festival’s economic impact on the city has become massive. It’s reportedly bigger than Jazz Fest.

Think New Orleans needs more street food? This weekend's French Quarter Festival is teeming with inspiration for new ideas.

Street food is a term that has a lot of cachet in the dining world these days. I just wish we could get our hands on it a little more.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The French Quarter Festival, a free four-day music festival centered in this city's historic center, is seeing what some long-time performers say are the largest crowds ever for a festival that's been around since the 1980s.

"This is the biggest I've seen it," jazz trumpeter Leroy Jones told the Times-Picayune after a midday set with one of his bands, New Orleans' Finest.

Throngs of people packed the French Quarter and listened to music on 22 stages around the old city center.

It is billed as the largest free music festival in the South.  Over a half-million people are expected in and around the Vieux Carré as the French Quarter Festival kicks-off four days of music, food and fun.
