University of New Orleans to launch nonprofit newsroom

The University of New Orleans announced a plan to create a new nonprofit, multimedia newsroom today, in partnership with WWNO. The newsroom, to be featured online at NewOrleansReporter.org, is intended to produce in-depth local reporting on issues of vital interest to the New Orleans community.

NewOrleansReporter.org will generate online, mobile and radio content, said University officials, and is intended to create a sustainable model for nonprofit journalism in greater New Orleans for decades to come.

Southland Conference officials visit UNO

Southland Conference officials have made a visit to the University of New Orleans as they prepare to make a final determination on the school's petition for membership in the conference.

UNO officials said they were optimistic after the Thursday visit.

Southland Conference Commissioner Tom Burnett was joined in New Orleans by Southeastern Louisiana University President John Crain, Stephen F. Austin President Baker Pattillo and McNeese State Athletic Director Tommy McClelland. He the group was extremely impressed with UNO's athletic facilities, especially Lakefront Arena.

Harpists Jazz Audiences with Two Concerts

It is a weekend for Jazz harp. The New Orleans Chapter of the American Harp Society is hosting its first Jazz and Pop harp weekend at the University of New Orleans, helping students from around the country improve their Jazz harp skills.  Professional members of the local harp society and guest artists will perform in two public concerts.

Incoming UNO President Wants Better Marketing of UNO Brand

The University of Louisiana Board of Supervisors has unanimously selected Peter Fos as the new president of the University of New Orleans. 

Fos graduated from UNO in 1972. He's now the director of health policy and system management at LSU Health Sciences Center. After he was selected at the supervisors' Baton Rouge meeting, Fos said his first priority is improving the UNO brand.
