Weekly Claims for Unemployment Insurance Rise

First-time claims for unemployment insurance in Louisiana for the week ending Jan. 5, increased from the previous week's total.

The state labor department figures released Friday show the initial claims increased to 3,253 from the previous week's total of 2,505. Initial claims were below the comparable week a year earlier at 4,372.

The four-week moving average, which is a less volatile measure of claims, decreased to 3,196 from the previous week's total of 3,262.

Weekly Unemployment Insurance Claims Drop

First-time claims for unemployment insurance in Louisiana for the week ending Dec. 29 fell from the previous week's total, mainly because the Christmas holidays cut a day from the work week.

The state labor department figures released Friday show the initial claims decreased to 2,505 from the previous week's total of 3,495.

The four-week moving average, which is a less volatile measure of claims, fell to 3,262 from the previous week's total of 3,648.

Louisiana jobless rate dips as labor force shrinks

Unemployment ticked down in Louisiana in August as some people left the labor force.

The state's jobless rate fell to 7.4 percent, down from 7.6 percent in July but above the 7.3 percent unemployment rate of August 2011.

Louisiana's jobless rate never rose as high as the nation's, and fell to a post-recession low of 6.9 percent in January. Since then, jobless rates had risen in five out of six months. August was the first improvement since January.

Isaac causes spike in initial jobless claims

Hurricane Isaac caused a spike in initial claims for unemployment insurance in Louisiana for the week ending Sept. 8.

Figures released Friday show initial claims increased to 9,023 from 2,345. That's the most initial claims filed in one week since Hurricanes Gustav and Ike impacted Louisiana in September 2008, resulting in 10,264 first-time claims filed the week ending Sept. 27, 2008.

First-time claims for unemployment insurance in Louisiana for the week ending Aug. 25, increased from the previous week's total.

The state labor department figures released Friday show the initial claims increased to 2,956 from the previous week's total of 2,835. Initial claims were below the comparable week a year earlier at 3,648.

The four-week moving average, which is a less volatile measure of claims, decreased to 2,055 from the previous week's total of 2,963.

Jobless rates drop in 62 of 64 Louisiana parishes

Unemployment rates fell from June to July in 62 of Louisiana's 64 parishes, according to figures released Friday.

Lafourche Parish has the lowest jobless rate at 5.2 percent. East Carroll Parish's 20 percent rate is the highest. Only Concordia and Franklin parishes saw increases.

The oil-fueled Houma metro area, with 5.4 percent unemployment, is lowest among Louisiana's eight urban areas. Joblessness in metro New Orleans fell to 8.1 percent from 8.7 percent in June. In metro Baton Rouge, it fell to 8 percent from 8.7 percent.

First-time claims for unemployment insurance in Louisiana for the week ending Aug. 4 increased from the previous week's total.

The state labor department figures released Friday show the initial claims increased to 3,216 from the previous week's total of 2,988.

For the comparable week a year earlier, there were 4,033 initial claims.

The four-week moving average, which is a less volatile measure of claims, decreased to 3,240 from the previous week's total of 3,426.

First-time claims for unemployment insurance benefits in Louisiana for the week ending July 7 increased from the previous week's total.

State labor department figures released Friday show initial claims rose to 3,960 from the previous week's total of 3,456. The figure was lower than it was for the comparable week a year earlier, when there were 4,053 initial claims.

The four-week moving average, which is a less volatile measure of claims, decreased to 3,714 from the previous week's total of 3,792.
