Rampart Streetcar Construction Will Continue Despite Lawsuit

A federal judge says she will not stop construction on a new streetcar line in New Orleans while a group sues for more studies of the project.

The New Orleans Advocate reports that District Judge Nannette Brown says plaintiffs did not offer any evidence that the job involves federal money. That's a key requirement for such a lawsuit.

A local bond issue is paying for the $41.5 million North Rampart Street line.

St. Charles Streetcar Line Named National Historic Landmark

The St. Charles streetcar line is one of nine new national historic landmarks announced Tuesday by the Department of the Interior.

The St. Charles Line has been in operation since 1835, making it the oldest continuously working street railway in the country.

Baton Rouge May Get A Streetcar Line

Plans are in the works for a $100 million streetcar line in the fast-developing Nicholson Drive corridor.

Planner John Fregonese tells The Advocate the corridor is a hotbed of commercial and residential development. Fregonese is working to implement the city's master land-use plan, known as FutureBR.

He cites developments such as IBM's service center, the residential tower going up next to it, the Water Campus coastal research center and the mixed-use River District development.

Getting To Jazz Fest By Streetcar And Bus

The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority serves the Jazz Fest with four different transit lines, and is planning extra service to meet the heavy demand expected this week and next.

There are three bus lines that will take you within walking distance of the Fair Grounds:

94-Broad
32-Leonidas
91-Jackson/Esplanade

You can also get to the Fair Grounds by taking the Canal — City Park/Museum streetcar line.

The RTA will also be providing buses along Canal St. and St. Charles Ave. to supplement the streetcar lines.

Streetcar Expansion Could Help Local Communities

The Loyola Avenue streetcar line is now operating from the Union Passenger Terminal at Howard Avenue to Canal Street. While much has been made of it serving merely to shuttle tourists to the Superdome, it could serve residents as well.

The new Loyola Ave. streetcar on Friday. The line will be officially launched today.
