BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A proposal that would allow gay couples and other unmarried couples to adopt children together in Louisiana has been defeated by a House committee. The bill would have allowed adoptions by people who aren't related to a child by blood but live in the same home and establish a relationship with the child.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A Catholic elementary school in Baton Rouge is the setting for Gov. Bobby Jindal as he signs legislation reshaping numerous aspects of public education in Louisiana, including a bill allowing the state to fund private school tuition for some students.
Wednesday's bill signing ceremony takes place at Redemptorist Elementary School.
The wide-ranging measures to be signed at the school also make major changes to teacher tenure rules, while giving more hiring and firing power to school principals and superintendents.
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The Louisiana House is getting ready to decide whether the state Board of Ethics should have a bit more power in enforcement of the state ethics code. Currently, the Board of Ethics cannot appeal decisions by a board of administrative law judges.
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The Louisiana House has agreed to prohibit smoking within 25 feet of the entrance to any building where smoking already is banned. Louisiana prohibits smoking in restaurants, public places, public buildings and many places of employment. The measure now heads to the Senate.
