The New Orleans Pelicans came out strong against the visiting Indiana Pacers, opening a revamped New Orleans Arena for their first regular season game and introducing mascot Pierre the Pelican to a social media uproar.
But the team couldn’t ride the excitement through the half. The Pacers, coming off the first of a back-to-back and without injured F/G Danny Granger, crawled their way back from a 16-point second quarter deficit to take the win, 95-90.
The New Orleans Pelicans announced today that they are exercising their third-year contract options on forwards Anthony Davis and Austin Rivers.
Exercising the option means both players will be under contract with the team this year, and through the end of next season.
Davis was the first overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft. He started 60 or the 64 games he played in last season, averaging 13.5 points, 1.8 blocks and 1.2 steals. Davis was a 2013-13 NBA All-Rookie First Team member, leading all rookies in per-game rebounds, steals, blocks and double-doubles.
The New Orleans Saints gave up their first loss of the season to the New England Patriots in Foxborough, Mass., 30-27.
Sunday's loss to the Patriots wasn’t the fault of the Saints' defense.
Rob Ryan’s squad gave the team two chances to win the game in the final minutes. All they needed was a first down and the game would be over. But the Saints’ offense blew both chances to run out the clock, and a rare poor punt by Thomas Morstead gave the Pats good field position.
New Orleans has been named a finalist to host Super Bowl LII in 2018, according to the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation.
The New Orleans Saints organization and the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation will partner in making the official bid which, if awarded, would be the city's 11th Super Bowl and coincide with New Orleans' Tri-centennial that year.
The New Orleans Pelicans have waived forward Rodney Carney, the team announced today.
