When Devon Walker returned to the Tulane University campus last week, he was greeted with kisses in the hallways. Students and faculty applauded him.

One year ago this weekend, in the second game of the football season, Walker, a team captain for Tulane, went in for a tackle and broke his neck. He was paralyzed from the shoulders down.

For months, he recovered far from home in two different hospitals. But now he's back in Louisiana and re-enrolling at Tulane, in New Orleans.

Getting together to watch the New Orleans Saints play is a special ritual for New Orleanians, as important to us as the Jazz Fest and as essential to the character of the city and the region as Mardi Gras.

We live and die by our Saints, and our church is the Superdome. Well, it is for half the season — for the other half our beloved boys in black and gold are on the road, and we cram together in barrooms and living rooms to cheer them on… and to mourn their inconsistent ineptitude.

Saints Remain Undefeated (In Preseason) With 31-23 Victory Over Houston

The third week of the NFL preseason is generally considered a dress rehearsal for the regular season.

And with that in mind, the Saints’ performance Sunday evening — a 31-23 victory over the Houston Texans at Reliant Stadium — was mostly positive.

Quarterback Drew Brees made quick work of the Texans’ defense, compiling 104 yards and a touchdown on four completions.

Saints Cruise To Second Preseason Victory

It’s just two games into their preseason schedule, but the New Orleans Saints appear to be in mid-season form.

Saints starters on both sides of the ball played almost the entire first half in a 28-20 victory over the Oakland Raiders Friday night in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

With the wide receiver corps still taking shape, quarterback Drew Brees involved several of his wide-outs early and often in the first half game plan.

Friday night's pre-season Saints game against the Oakland Raiders was a landmark event.

Not for the players on the field, so much as for the man in the announcing booth.

Jerry Romig has called more than 440 Saints games, in his 44-year history with the team, and this one was his last. Now, his son Mark Romig will take over the job.

Romig is a veteran broadcaster beyond football, having played key roles at WDSU and in the co-founding of New Orleans public television station WLAE.

After what seemed to many fans an interminable offseason, the New Orleans Saints returned to action Friday night in their preseason opener.
