Saints Offseason Workouts Underway

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Offseason workouts are getting underway on Monday for the New Orleans Saints and Drew Brees still hasn't committed to showing up. The star quarterback is looking for a long-term contract extension, while the team has slapped him with the franchise tag. That amounts to a one-year deal with no long-term security in the case of an injury.

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton has been "suspended for one season without pay for his involvement in the team's bounty program," NFL.com reports.

The team's former defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams, "has been suspended indefinitely." He ran the program that paid players bounties for hits that knocked opponents out of games. Williams left the Saints after last season to join the St. Louis Rams.

New Orleans Braces for Saints and BCS Championship Crowds

Football will be taking over New Orleans in the next few days. Mayor Mitch Landrieu and others are asking the public to plan for heavy traffic and massive crowds.

The Saints are getting ready for tomorrow's first-round playoff game with the Detroit Lions, while crowds continue celebrating ahead of Monday's BCS Championship. Mayor Landrieu says residents must be prepared to accommodate the quarter-million visitors.

Former Penn State defensive coordinator Gerald "Jerry" Sandusky was found guilty of sexual abuse, convicted of 45 out of 48 counts on Friday, June 22. He was accused of sexually abusing 10 boys over a 15-year period in a scandal that has rocked the university's community. Several alleged victims have testified in the trial, which began on June 11.
