Louisiana State University

While Louisiana State University’s live tiger mascot, Mike VI, is a fan favorite, he doesn’t always pounce at the opportunity to make public appearances. According to LSU vets, it’s a decision that’s completely up to him because he’s never sedated nor forced to go into the stadium.

The adult male tiger arrived on LSU’s campus in 2007. Since then, he’s appeared in 32 of the 43 home games and welcomed by roaring fans.

The New Orleans Saints wrapped up the preseason with a 22-13 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

This was only the second time the Saints had ever faced the Ravens in the preseason. On Aug. 26, 2005 the two teams played the last game in the Superdome before Hurricane Katrina.

As expected, most of the Saints’ stars sat — Drew Brees warmed up before the game and dressed out in full pads, but never made it off the sideline. The fourth preseason game is a chance to evaluate players before the final cuts to make the 53-man regular season roster. Coach Sean Payton:

New Orleans is one of the country's most popular tourist destinations. There is no specific reason — there's no amusement park or beach — but like other great cities such as Paris and Manhattan, people come here to spend time just living like we do.

The New Orleans Pelicans announced their preseason schedule this week. The Battlin' Birds (have a better nickname for our Aspirational Aves? Share it in the comments below) will play seven preseason games, including two in New Orleans at the Smoothie King Center.

The back-to-back home games — against the Houston Rockets on Oct. 14 and the Oklahoma City Thunder on Oct. 16 — will take place during the Saints' bye week.

The New Orleans Saints will roll into the Superdome Friday evening for their first home game since December 29.

However, it’s just a preseason game, which is little more than a glorified practice session. There is not much on the line, other than some jockeying at the edges of the roster.

Drew Brees will almost certainly remain out, nursing a strained oblique — which are the muscles on the side of the body — so look for more backup QB competition between Luke McCown and Ryan Griffin.

College football season is upon us. The first regular season game for the LSU Tigers is in two weeks. Playoffs debut this year. And the Tigers will have a new starting quarterback. There are major shifts happening off the field for Division I programs too.

It's just about that time: New Orleans is getting ready for yet another historic Super Bowl victory.

All we need to do is win all these games first. No problem.

This week on Inside the Arts, the 20th Essence Festival kicks off Independence weekend. We catch up with Prince protégé, singer Elisa Fiorillo Dease, who will perform with the pop icon in the Superdome.

The party with a purpose, Essence, continues with activities in the Morial Convention Center. We talk with author Jason Mott. His bestseller, The Returned, is the basis for the hit ABC TV series, Resurrection.

And, we round out with a song that takes a look at the World Cup through the eyes of the players.

The World Cup is upon us! In the next month 32 different countries will vie to be the soccer champion of the world. Here’s a few things to know.
