SLU Professor to Talk About KKK

Southeastern Louisiana University historian Samuel Hyde Jr. discusses the history of the Ku Klux Klan in the Lower Mississippi Valley for an episode of the "Fatal Encounters" program on the Discovery Channel.

The program is set to air Feb. 10.

Hyde, the university's Leon C. Ford Endowed Chair of Regional Studies, is interviewed in the program titled "White Hot Rage."

Southeastern Student Shot, Killed

Hammond police are investigated the death of a Southeastern Louisiana University graduate student who was shot inside his apartment.

Police told The Advocate 23-year-old Raphael Garrison was killed about 2:15 p.m. Friday.

Lt. Vincent Giannobile said police found Garrison lying on the floor of his apartment. Investigators don't know how many times he was shot.

Gainnobile says police are looking for two men seen leaving the area in a tan car.

SLU Offers Seminar on Social Media Marketing

The Louisiana Small Business Development Center at Southeastern Louisiana University will partner with the Franklinton Chamber of Commerce for a seminar focused on social media marketing.

The session will be held on Jan. 30 from 1-3 p.m. at the Franklinton Town Hall.

There is no cost to attend, but pre-registration is requested. Wi-Fi will be available during the class, so participants can bring a fully charged laptop, tablet or smartphone.

SLU Offers Small Business Counseling

The Louisiana Small Business Development Center at Southeastern Louisiana University is working with business organizations in the Florida Parishes to offer counseling sessions for business owners.

The sessions are free and confidential, and are by appointment only. They are offered in Livingston, St. Helena, Washington and St. Tammany parishes.

Southeastern Louisiana University will offer a bookkeeping certificate program beginning in February.

Three courses make up the program, which uses QuickBooks 2012 software.

North Texas Beats Southeastern Louisiana 45-40

Roger Franklin scored 12 points to lead North Texas to a 45-40 win over Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday.

Alzee Williams added 11 points, and Tony Mitchell pulled down 10 rebounds and eight points for the Mean Green (4-6).

North Texas led 19-18 at halftime in a game with six lead changes. The Mean Green's largest lead was nine with 2.19 to play in the game. North Texas had 16 points off Southeastern Louisiana turnovers.

Brandon Fortenberry had 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Lions (1-7).

SLU sets Constitution Day lecture

Ryan Rowberry, a former U.S. Supreme Court fellow, will be the featured lecturer as Southeastern Louisiana University marks Constitution Day on Thursday.

Rowberry is an assistant professor at the Georgia State University College of Law and associate director of the Center for the Comparative Study of Metropolitan Growth. His presentation, "The History, Structure, and Challenges of the U.S. Legal System," is set for 1 p.m. in Southeastern's Student Union Theatre.

It is free and open to the public.

SLU seeks oldest living graduate

The Southeastern Louisiana University Alumni Association is searching for the university's oldest living graduate.

Alumni Association director Kathy Pittman said the search is part of the group's 85th anniversary and SLU's 2012 homecoming festivities.

Deadline to submit names for consideration is Oct. 2. The person identified as the oldest living graduate will be recognized at the alumni association's awarded ceremony on Oct. 26, Pittman said.

Threat from Isaac closes SLU

Classes and all activities at Southeastern Louisiana University have been canceled through Friday because of the threat from Hurricane Isaac.

The university says classes will resume on Tuesday after the Labor Day holiday.

The Hammond campus and its St. Tammany Center in Mandeville, Livingston Parish Literacy and Technology Center in Walker and nursing school in Baton Rouge will open for staff to return on Friday.

SLU offers makeup for movies class

Southeastern Louisiana University's Division of Extended Studies is offering a non-credit course on makeup for filmmaking.

Available for high school students and adults interested in the film industry, the course will be taught by Tara Bennett, a freelance makeup artist with experience in makeup for photography, film, and theatrical stage.

The course is scheduled on the university's main Hammond campus on Wednesdays from 6-8 p.m. from Sept. 12- Oct. 10. The cost is $125, which includes all materials needed, and one continuing education credit will be awarded.
