Two shelters open in St. Tammany Parish

Two shelters have opened in St. Tammany Parish as Hurricane Isaac approaches.

Officials of the St. Tammany Parish School Board and the Red Cross said the shelters are at William Pitcher Junior High School, 415 S. Jefferson Ave. in Covington and at Creekside Junior High School, 65434 Louisiana Highway 41, Pearl River.

People going to the shelters are asked to bring food, medicine, bedding and activities for children.

Shelters open in Terrebonne, Lafourche parishes

With mandatory evacuations issued for areas of Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes outside of hurricane protection, shelters in Raceland and Houma have opened to evacuees.

Terrebonne Parish opens shelter for pets

Terrebonne Parish officials have opened a temporary pet shelter at the West Houma Gym on Williams Ave.

The Courier reports this temporary shelter is only available for pets of those residents who will be staying at the parish shelter at the Houma Municipal Auditorium.

The pet owner is responsible for the animal's food and water, and walking the animal every morning and evening during the allotted time period.

Officials say you must register at Houma Municipal Auditorium before bringing your pet to the shelter.

Jefferson Parish evacuees moved to new shelter

Jefferson Parish officials say a shelter opened in Terrytown for Lafitte, Crown Point and Barataria residents has closed.

Authorities said people who had been at the shelter have been moved to Westside Primary School in Hammond.

Washington Parish to open emergency shelters in advance of Isaac

Washington Parish President Richard Thomas has asked the Red Cross to assist in opening shelters in advance of Tropical Storm Isaac's landfall, the parish said in a statement posted on its Facebook page.

Shelters will open at 6:00 a.m. Tuesday, the parish said, and remain open until the inclement weather subsides.

The shelters are safe havens only, the parish said, and do not have backup electricity. Residents are urged to bring necessities such as bedding, toiletries and medications with them.
