Harvey Man Convicted of Molesting Young Girls

A Harvey man who served as deacon at a New Orleans church has been convicted of sexually abusing girls as young as 4 years old.

Jefferson Parish prosecutors say his victims include a woman when she was a child and her two daughters more than decade later.

The Times-Picayune reports 58-year-old Michael Videau faces mandatory life in prison when he is sentenced next month.

A jury deliberated almost four hours Thursday before convicting Videau of seven counts, involving five victims.

The case of George Zimmerman has taken a surprising turn today: In an audio tape released by prosecutors today, a woman accuses Zimmerman of molesting her for about a decade.

Zimmerman has been charged with second-degree murder in the killing of Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman has claimed he killed the unarmed 17-year-old in self-defense. But Martin's family and supporters allege Zimmerman racially profiled the African-American teenager and followed him despite a police dispatcher's advice not to do that.

Penn State sex-abuse charges inspire new state laws

BATON ROUGE — A sexual abuse scandal that rocked Pennsylvania State University has resulted in new laws in Louisiana to penalize those who fail to report allegations of child sex abuse and to protect those who do.

Lawmakers say the measures were inspired by the Penn State scandal that rocked the university's administration and its athletics department.

Three of the bills have been signed by Gov. Bobby Jindal. The Republican governor said he intends to sign the fourth.
