New Orleans academy graduates new cops

The New Orleans Police Department Training Academy graduated 28 recruits on Thursday, the first class subject to higher standards before being accepted as recruits.

The Times-Picayune reports applicants who completed the 23-week academy program were required to have at least 60 hours of college credit or the equivalent of two years of military service.

NOPD: DNA links rape in 2000, murder in 1992

New Orleans police say recently received DNA evidence links a rape in 2000 and a sexual assault and killing in 1992.

They got a description last week from the woman who was raped in 2000. A police artist used it for a computer-created composite, then sketched what the man may look like now. Police released the two drawings in hope that people can help them identify the man.

The killing was that of 20-year-old Jennifer Altemeier, who was strangled on March 3 — Mardi Gras — 1992.

Police group seeks to have say in NOPD reforms

The Fraternal Order of Police wants to have a say in an agreement New Orleans has reached with the Justice Department to overhaul the city's troubled police department.

WVUE-TV reports that the group has asked U.S. District Judge Susie Morgan to allow it to intervene in the matter before the judge signs off on the agreement.

The TV station reports that the FOP has complained in the past that it was left out of the negotiations and that officers need more details about what will be expected of them.

NOPD reform agreement hearing set for Katrina anniversary

A federal judge has set an Aug. 29 hearing on an agreement the city of New Orleans reached with the Justice Department to overhaul the city's troubled police department.

U.S. District Judge Susie Morgan's order Tuesday also sets deadlines for those interested in the case to intervene and for the public to file comments on the proposed agreement.

Court meeting held on New Orleans police reforms

Attorneys for the city of New Orleans and the federal government met behind closed doors with a federal judge to discuss a new agreement to overhaul the New Orleans Police Department.

Participants in Thursday's status conference with U.S. District Judge Susie Morgan declined to go into details. U.S. Attorney Jim Letten described the meeting as productive but added that he was not at liberty to say more. It was unclear when Morgan might grant final court approval to the agreement, which was the result of long negotiations between the city and federal officials.
