Man fatally shot in Algiers

Police in New Orleans are investigating a shooting death in the city's Algiers neighborhood.

A city news release says the shooting happened around 9:20 p.m. Friday. The victim, whose identity was not available, was a man found with a gunshot wound to the head. The body was found on the ground, lying a bicycle.

Police arrest boyfriend of woman shot to death

New Orleans Police have arrested the boyfriend of a woman found shot to death.

Authorities Thursday booked 27-year-old Gary Burnett with second-degree murder of 35-year-old Shonray Lee, who lived on the city's west bank. Detectives found Lee near the bottom of a staircase early Wednesday. The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office says she died of bullet wounds to the back and chest.

Groups denied say in NOPD reforms

A federal judge has denied petitions from four groups seeking to have a say in an agreement New Orleans has reached with the Justice Department to overhaul the city's troubled police department.

The Times-Picayune reports that U.S. District Judge Susie Morgan on Friday denied requests from two police association organizations, Independent Police Monitor Susan Hutson and nonprofit Community United for Change.

New Orleans police officer booked with DWI

A New Orleans Police officer has been suspended following his weekend arrest for suspicion of drunk driving.

Harahan Police arrested 57-year-old Eddie Polite early Sunday after spotting him driving the wrong way down a one-way street with no headlights.

Police chief Mac Dickinson told The Times-Picayune Polite was taken into custody after he refused to take a field sobriety or Breathalyzer test. Dickinson says investigators later obtained a warrant to draw Polite's blood. Results are pending.

NOPD: Drug buy-bust leads to murder arrest

New Orleans police say a new strategy that involves undercover officers buying drugs from dealers led to the arrest of a 32-year-old murder suspect.

Police say they arrested Burnell Allen on Wednesday on a charge of second-degree murder. Allen is accused of gunning down 21-year-old Lonnie Johnson on June 9.

Officers conducted a drug buy-bust on Tuesday in the same area where the murder took place. Detectives say they got enough information about Allen to arrest him after interviewing people detained in the drug buy-bust.

City, feds fear delays in police reform case

The city of New Orleans and the federal government want to limit the role of various groups that hope to help shape federally enforced reforms in the scandal-plagued New Orleans Police Department.

An agreement was announced last month that would settle a Justice Department complaint against the city. But it requires approval of a federal judge, who is to hold a hearing on Aug. 29.
