The New Orleans Saints handed the Atlanta Falcons their first loss of the 2012 season Sunday in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome by a margin of 31-27.

The Falcons started the season on a roll, traveling to New Orleans with an unblemished 8-0 record. But, despite Atlanta’s successes, the Saints always seem to slow the Falcons down.

In their last 13 meetings, the Saints have now defeated the Falcons eleven times, and four straight overall.

The Saints beat the Philadelphia Eagles 28-13 at the Superdome, showing flashes of their old brilliance.

“Bend but don’t break,” could have been the mantra for the historically bad New Orleans Saints defense during a game that featured some defensive miscues and a few spectacular plays by the Eagles’ skill position players — most notably a 77-yard bomb from Michael Vick to DeSean Jackson in the third quarter.

Saints register preseason win over Texans, 34-27

Matt Schaub and Drew Brees looked sharp in a high-scoring first half, and Joe Morgan's touchdown catch late in the fourth quarter lifted the New Orleans Saints to a 34-27 preseason victory over the Houston Texans on Saturday night.

Schaub completed 15-of-18 passes for 194 yards and a touchdown, but three turnovers by Houston (No. 4 in the AP Pro 32) helped the Saints (No. 9) stay close despite two fumbles of their own.

Brees was 17 of 25 for 179 yards, including TD tosses to Lance Moore and Jimmy Graham.

Norman Sas, The Genius Behind Electric Football, Dies

Setting up the players. Where would they go after the switch is thrown?
Beth A. Keiser AP

Some of us are old enough to remember when electric football first became one of the coolest toys.

Versions had been around since just after World War II. But when the NFL attached its name to the vibrating game in 1967, it quickly became one of those must-haves for many young boys.

Not that most of us could really get the plastic players to do what we wanted.

Brees Hopeful of Long-Term Deal With Saints

NEW YORK — New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees says he's confident he'll get a long-term deal done with the Saints. Brees acknowledged Tuesday that the offseason of distractions has slowed down negotiations. On the subject of those off-field issues, he says the NFL has produced no proof the Saints' defense engaged in a bounty system.

NFL Denies Witness Retractions in Bounty Probe

The NFL is denying accusations that it covered up retractions made by key witnesses in its bounty investigation, or that Commissioner Roger Goodell has placed gag orders on Saints employees and others who could help punished players clear their names.

Lawyer Peter Ginsberg, who represents suspended Saints player Jonathan Vilma, made the accusations when punished players appeared earlier this week for an appeal hearing, a full transcript of which has been obtained by The Associated Press.

Hargrove spoke Tuesday outside NFL headquarters.

Hargrove, Will Smith, Scott Fujita and Jonathan Vilma each attended appeals hearings for their suspensions with Commissioner Roger Goodell at the league offices in Manhattan on Monday.
