Thousands Turn Out For Saints' Annual Black And Gold Scrimmage

New Orleans football fans turned out in droves this past Saturday morning at Saints training camp for the annual Black and Gold scrimmage.

The line stretched for blocks down Airline Drive and into the adjacent Zephyr Field parking lot as more than 5,100 Saints fans braved the early August heat to get a glimpse of their favorite team.

“This is the most people I’ve ever seen at Saints training camp,” one beer and water vendor said.

NFL's Gregg Williams, Who Orchestrated Bounty Program, Is Reinstated

Less than a year after orchestrating a bounty program in Saint Louis, Gregg Williams will be back in the NFL next season. The Tennessee Titans have hired the former Saints defensive coordinator as a senior assistant coach.

Back in May of last year, Williams was suspended indefinitely for being part of a scheme in which he set up cash rewards for hits that knocked opponents out of games.

Super Bowl Referees Named

The officiating crew for this year's Super Bowl was announced by the NFL this morning.

Referee Jerome Boger will lead the seven-man crew this Sunday. Boger was promoted to referee in 2006, and has been an NFL game official for nine seasons. This is his first Super Bowl appearance, but he has previously officiated four divisional playoff games.

Congressmen Write NFLPA's Smith About HGH Testing

Chastising the NFL Players Association for "remarkable recalcitrance" on testing for human growth hormone, two members of Congress have pledged "to take a more active role" on the issue and say they could ask players to testify before their committee.

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee chairman Darrell Issa, a California Republican, and ranking Democrat Elijah Cummings of Maryland tell NFLPA head DeMaurice Smith in a letter sent Monday that the union "has prevented meaningful progress on this issue."

In New Orleans, an Unwelcome Mat for Goodell

New Orleans Saints fans are celebrating the return of coach Sean Payton from his suspension following last year's "bountygate" scandal.

But NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who will present the NFL championship trophy when the Super Bowl is played in New Orleans on Feb. 3, is getting a less-than-warm welcome in some quarters.

Some hold a grudge over the suspension of Payton and key players and coaches. Signs saying Goodell won't be served are posted at some bars and eateries. And Goodell's image adorns the dart board at one lounge.
