Mandeville police to collect prescription drugs

The Mandeville Police Department will collect unwanted and unused prescription drugs as part of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Sept. 29.

The Times-Picayune reports drugs can be turned in at police headquarters, 1876 U.S. Highway 190, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Department spokesman Lt. Gerald Sticker said the Drug Enforcement Administration sponsors the take-back day.

Mandeville issues voluntary evacuation

Mayor Donald Villere of Mandeville has issued a voluntary evacuation of all low-lying areas of the city in advance of Tropical Storm Isaac, according to a statement posted to the city's website.

The city says it expects to be directly affected by Isaac on Tuesday afternoon, with hurricane-force winds and rain increasing through Wednesday.

Tree-loving Mandeville tallies every tree

There are 151,347 trees, more or less, within Mandeville's city limits, and only about 7 percent of them are live oaks.

Those are among the findings of a study done for the city by two graduate students and their professors at the Southern University Agricultural Research & Extension Center.

Maggie Trenary, an inspector in the city planning department, tells The Times-Picayune (http://bit.ly/NrgLj5) that the low number of live oaks was a surprise. She says the city will have to plant more.

Man Sought in Ex-Wife's Death Surrenders

MANDEVILLE, La. (AP) — The ex-husband of a woman whose body was found in St. Tammany Parish Sunday evening has surrendered to Calcasieu Parish authorities

Capt. George Bonnett says investigators had a warrant accusing Calvin Jefferson of second-degree murder of 31-year-old Nicole Jefferson.

Jefferson surrendered late Tuesday, about six hours after the sheriff's office announced the warrant for his arrest.
