LSU scientist receives environmental award

An LSU scientist has received the Wetland Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Association for Ecology.

The Advocate reports the award was presented to Eugene Turner during the organization's International Wetland Conference held in Orlando, Fla., in June.

Turner is a distinguished research master and holds the Shell Endowed Chair in Oceanography and Wetland Studies at LSU.

His work has focused on low oxygen levels in Louisiana coastal areas, a phenomenon known as the "dead zone."

Singers sought for LSU sports events

Open auditions will be held Saturday for individual singers or groups who want to perform "The Star Spangled Banner" at many LSU sporting events Saturday.

Anthem singing for LSU football games is excluded.

The Advocate reports auditions are set for 10 a.m. to noon in the Recital Hall of the LSU School of Music building.

LSU seeking hospital partners amid funding woes

The head of the LSU System, William Jenkins, says he's talking to private hospital leaders about ways to partner and keep the university-run hospitals open despite ongoing budget woes.

But he acknowledged Monday that with shrinking funding and large numbers of uninsured patients, LSU will have a lot of persuading to do.

Jenkins said LSU will need to bring in private health care facilities to operate some of the public hospitals, if all will be able to remain open.

Jindal names cabinet secretary to LSU board

Gov. Bobby Jindal has tapped one of his cabinet secretaries to also be on the governing board for LSU.

Jindal's office announced Tuesday that Natural Resources Secretary Scott Angelle was the governor's newest appointment to the LSU Board of Supervisors.

Angelle, from Breaux Bridge, is a member of Jindal's closest circle of advisers. In addition to his cabinet post, Angelle is the governor's chief legislative lobbyist and the administration's liaison for federal oil and gas permitting issues.
