Man Killed in Motorcycle Accident in New Orleans

Police say a 47-year-old New Orleans man was killed when the motorcycle he was riding struck an oak tree.

The accident happened around 5 p.m. Sunday.

Police say the man's identity has not been released pending notification of his family.

Officer Frank Robertson tells The Times-Picayune the victim was traveling northbound on Elysian Fields when he clipped a white SUV parked on the shoulder of the road.

Loyola Avenue Streetcar Line Debuts

The new Loyola Ave. streetcar on Friday. The line will be officially launched today.

Celebration planned for new streetcar line.

Federal and city officials will gather at the Union Passenger Terminal today to kick off service on the new Loyola Avenue streetcar line. Special stops are planned along the mile-and-a-half route.

Prosecutors: Broussard Should Pay $230K

Federal prosecutors argue former Jefferson Parish President Aaron Broussard should be ordered to forfeit more than $230,000 in cash as part of his sentence for pleading guilty to corruption charges.

Broussard is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 25 by U.S. District Judge Hayden Head. The longtime parish president pleaded guilty in September to charges he cheated taxpayers in a payroll fraud scheme and took payoffs from a parish contractor.

Early Crawfish Crop Encouraging After Two Lean Years

After two lean years caused by summer drought and winter cold, it looks as if there will be plenty of crawfish for Super Bowl Sunday — one of the biggest days of the year for Louisiana's crawfish dealers.

Last year's wetter summer and a relatively warm and wet winter are boosting the early crop for a season that peaks in April and May. January downpours that flooded crawfish ponds will dent the total, but those in the business call it the best early season in years.
