LA Swift Bus Service To Baton Rouge Ends Today

Today is the final day for the LA Swift bus. That’s the commuter bus between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, started shortly after Hurricane Katrina. It has provided transport between the cities for just a few dollars, by far the cheapest option available.

Downtown at Tulane and Loyola Avenues, Carrie Robicheaux waits for the Swift bus back to Baton Rouge, after a trip to see her New Orleans doctor. She’s taken this bus since she moved away after Katrina.

The Last Bus to New Orleans

LA Swift got its start after Hurricane Katrina, shuttling evacuees and recovery workers between the Crescent and Capitol cities.

Ridership spiked after the storm, dropped off, and is now steadily growing. But the riders are commuters, using the bus to get to work.

The bus ran out of funding in June, but the service provider agreed to keep rolling another month. Long-time rider MiLisa York, who’s started a petition to keep the bus going long-term.

Survey Says LA Swift Shutdown Could Hurt Jobs

State plans to shut down the low-cost bus from Baton Rouge to New Orleans may harm economic ties between the cities.

According to a survey released Wednesday by The Center for Planning Excellence, more than half of LA Swift riders use the service to get to and from work.

LA Swift bus service hits millionth ride benchmark

LA Swift, the state-run commuter bus service between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, will reach its millionth ride this month.

That's according to the state Department of Transportation and Development.

The bus service began in October 2005 to help people displaced by Hurricane Katrina get to and from New Orleans to work on their homes and look for jobs. But officials say it's expanded into a regular means of transportation for some commuters.

On average, more than 10,000 riders use the bus service each month, according to DOTD.
