Lack of Funds Hinders NOLA Civil Rights Museum

After 13 years on the drawing board, a civil rights museum in New Orleans appears to be far from becoming a reality in Louisiana.

Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne tells The Advocate given the fiscal condition of the state, he doesn't see it becoming a priority.

The pace of the project frustrates former state Sen. Diana Bajoie, who originally pitched the museum to the Legislature in 1999.

Bajoie introduced legislation establishing the Louisiana Civil Rights Museum as the state's official civil rights museum.

New State Museum Leader Set to Begin in January

Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne has chosen a Baton Rouge native to lead the Louisiana State Museum system as assistant secretary in the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism.

Mark Tullos will begin the job Jan. 21, overseeing 11 museum sites around the state, including the Cabildo in New Orleans and the Capitol Park Museum in Baton Rouge.

Dardenne's office announced the hiring Monday.

Isaac's damage to state parks pegged at $7 million

Hurricane Isaac caused more than $7 million in damage to state parks in south Louisiana and forced some into months-long closures.

Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne, who oversees the state parks agency, told The Times-Picayune that the damage estimates are based on preliminary surveys.

Dardenne says Fontainebleau State Park in Mandeville and Fairview-Riverside State Park in Madisonville bore much of Isaac's wrath. The two St. Tammany Parks account for more than $3 million of the damage.

Lt. Gov. Dardenne promotes state in Dallas

Louisiana Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne is promoting the state's assets in neighboring Texas.

Dardenne is in Dallas to promote Louisiana Culinary Trails through a partnership with the Louisiana Travel Promotion Association and Texas Monthly magazine. The magazine is co-hosting Thursday's event for news media and food writers at which Cajun and Creole fare will be highlighted.

In addition, Dardenne was to meet with reporters to discuss the launch of Louisiana's new retirement brand and website: www.RetireLouisianaStyle.com

Jindal doesn't tell Dardenne when he leaves the state

Gov. Bobby Jindal doesn't notify Louisiana's second-ranking official when he travels out of state, even though Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne technically becomes governor whenever Jindal leaves.

The Republican governor has been out-of-state more than 25 percent of the time since May, campaigning for Republican presumptive presidential nominee Mitt Romney, raising money for GOP causes and candidates and participating in conferences.
