St. Tammany: Trees down, lake rising

As Hurricane Isaac neared southeast Louisiana, the sewer system in one lakefront community in St. Tammany Parish had to be shut down because floodwaters rose over sewage lift stations.

Officials say they believe most people had left Northshore Beach before Tammany Utilities began shutting down the sewage system there.

As bands of rain began crossing the parish Tuesday, calls to the parish's emergency operations center rose. Most were about downed trees.

Threat from Isaac closes SLU

Classes and all activities at Southeastern Louisiana University have been canceled through Friday because of the threat from Hurricane Isaac.

The university says classes will resume on Tuesday after the Labor Day holiday.

The Hammond campus and its St. Tammany Center in Mandeville, Livingston Parish Literacy and Technology Center in Walker and nursing school in Baton Rouge will open for staff to return on Friday.

Iberia Parish sets curfew as Isaac nears

The Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office has set a curfew for the parish. Residents must be off the streets between the hours of 10 p.m. Tuesday and 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Parish officials declared the curfew hours as Hurricane Isaac neared Louisiana's shores.

Citizens asked to report oily material or oiled debris

It is possible that oil and oily material present in the environment as a result of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill will wash up on beaches, barrier islands, marshes, and other areas along Louisiana's coast during and following severe weather events. Members of the public should not handle any oil or oily material, including tarballs, tar mats, or other oily debris.
