An Orleans Parish judge has ruled that the state law banning felons from owning firearms is unconstitutional, based on a state constitutional amendment ensuring an absolute right to bear arms in Louisiana, according to a report from the Times-Picayune.

Defense attorneys argue that Louisiana's new constitutional protection for gun ownership applies to felons, too.

State law makes it illegal for felons to own firearms.

But new constitutional amendment gives Louisiana residents a fundamental right to bear arms. And any law infringing on such a right must get the highest level of judicial scrutiny.

In the wake of the Newtown massacre, where are the school groups lobbying for new gun control laws? At best, the American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association are defensively protecting schools, as if they are forts, from the encroachment of gun lobbyists and activists who want more guns in schools. Educators know that firearm-free zones, while not perfect, create the best learning environments. Schools and colleges can teach gun advocates that taking a stand doesn’t require a gun.
