NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Comedian and actor Kevin Hart has been added to the main stage lineup for the 2012 Essence Music Festival.
Organizers say Hart, hot on the heels of his starring role in this week's No. 1 film, "Think Like a Man," will debut his comedic talents during the festival scheduled for July 6-8 at the Superdome. Hart joins a lineup that includes Aretha Franklin, Mary J. Blige, Charlie Wilson, Ledisi, Fantasia, and Eve.
The festival drew more than 422,000 attendees last year.
It is billed as the largest free music festival in the South. Over a half-million people are expected in and around the Vieux Carré as the French Quarter Festival kicks-off four days of music, food and fun.
From the Congo to Cuba, from Brazil to Basin Street and New Orleans "bounce," the universal drum will beat in Armstrong Park on March 24 and 25, when the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation presents the fifth annual Congo Square New World Rhythms Festival. WWNO's Paul Maassen spoke with Scott Aiges of the NOJ&HF about the festival.
A guaranteed highlight of the annual Satchmo Summerfest is any seminar session that features legendary jazz producer George Avakian. In a career that extends over eight decades, Avakian has produced outstanding recordings for such leading artists as Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Benny Goodman, and Duke Ellington – and earned most every honor the music world has to offer. WWNO'S Fred Kasten has more.
Put your dancing shoes on and shake a tail feather! The 12th Annual New Orleans Dance Festival kicks off next week as international dance instructors will be in town celebrating African and Caribbean dance traditions found in New Orleans culture.
