New Rules Announced For BP Damage Claims

New Orleans, La. – Fund administrator Kenneth Feinberg says people and businesses will now have to waive their right to sue BP and other companies involved in the oil spill if they want a final payment for damages. But he says there is an option to file every quarter and legal options will remain.

"The check will be sent to the claimant, and the claimant can continue every quarter to request, an interim payment until he, she or it decides - or not - to accept a final payment."

Oil Spill Report Says Early Estimates Accurate

New Orleans, La. – The head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says a new analysis shows chemical dispersants broke up about 16 percent of the total spill. Jane Lubchenco says that's twice the initial calculation. Some have raised concerns over the impact that the dispersants have had on the Gulf and on people's health.

"Now that we've had time to reflect, take into account more information, crunch the numbers, is a validation of the original numbers."

Senator Landrieu Keeps Up Drilling Moratorium Block

New Orleans, La. – Senator Landrieu says she's sympathetic to the administration's argument that it needs a leader in this tough economy. But she says the oil industry is stuck trying to deal with new rules enacted after the BP oil spill. Landrieu says she supports efforts to ensure drilling is safe.

"What I'm not supportive of is, under the guise of doing that, is - you know - shutting down drilling, which is a major industry, in the Gulf of Mexico."

GNO Inc. Monitoring Drilling Permits

New Orleans, La. – GNO president Michael Hecht says about half as many permits are being issued by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management for shallow-water drilling. Those rigs were not included in the drilling moratorium for deepwater operations, but are lagging behind numbers issued for the same time last year, and that's a concern.
