Orleans Parish School Board to lay off 21

The Orleans Parish School Board plans to lay off nearly two dozen employees, largely because of a drop in federal funding for low-income students and those with special needs.

The Times-Picayune reported the list of staff losing their jobs includes four teachers.

Interim Superintendent Stan Smith, who has been warning of a potential budget gap for months, said layoffs would have gone deeper — to more than 30 positions — were it not for some recent resignations.

ACLU Files 'Groundbreaking' Lawsuit Claiming Right To Learn To Read

The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan filed suit against the state on Thursday on behalf of about 1,000 grade-school kids from Highland Park, Mich. who are not reading at grade level.

Report: Penn State Did Nothing To Stop Sandusky

A former FBI director has released findings from his investigation into the Penn State child sexual abuse scandal. The university's board of trustees commissioned the report, asking him to examine what led to the scandal and how such problems could be prevented in the future.

Nicholls business dean named president of LCPA

The business dean at Nicholls State University is now the president of the Society of Louisiana Certified Public Accountants for 2012-2013.

Shawn Mauldin received the group's 2005 lifetime award for achievement in accounting information, and is a past president of its south central chapter. The LCPA has 6,300 members statewide.

Mauldin has bachelor's and master's degrees in business administration with an emphasis in accounting from Nicholls State and a doctorate in accounting from the University of Mississippi.
