In 2016 there were more drug related deaths than murders in New Orleans. Mostly due to opioids. Mayor Mitch Landrieu says he has a plan to deal with the growing national opioid epidemic. The Listening Post turned it's attention to opioids and asked:

1) What evidence of the opioid epidemic have you seen? How has it impacted you?

2) What would you do if someone you knew was addicted to opioids, like heroin or oxycodone?

3) What strategies would help communities better deal with drug epidemics?

A Metairie man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for drug convictions stemming from a 21-year-old man's fatal heroin overdose in 2008.

Federal prosecutors say 32-year-old Matthew Olvany was the source of the heroin that Zachary James Mosier ingested on the day he died.

Olvany, who was sentenced Thursday by U.S. District Judge Mary Ann Vial Lemmon, pleaded guilty in January 2010 to drug charges.

The Mandeville Police Department will collect unwanted and unused prescription drugs as part of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Sept. 29.

The Times-Picayune reports drugs can be turned in at police headquarters, 1876 U.S. Highway 190, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Department spokesman Lt. Gerald Sticker said the Drug Enforcement Administration sponsors the take-back day.

'Billy the Exterminator' faces drug charges

Jun 5, 2012

Authorities say William "Billy" Bretherton, star of the A&E reality TV show "Billy the Exterminator," has been arrested in Bossier City, La., on drug possession charges.

City spokesman Mark Natale says a warrant was issued last week for Bretherton and his wife, Mary, after items recovered from their hotel room tested positive for synthetic marijuana. They surrendered Friday.

Natale says police were called on April 28 to a Bossier City hotel following a 911 hang-up call from the room.
