New Orleans, La. – Excitable chickens greet visitors to a coop tucked away behind a Kenner landscaping nursery not far from the river. This is only their temporary home, however. Soon, this boisterous flock will relocate to a new farm now under development by the Latino Farmers Cooperative of Louisiana where they'll produce a lot more than eggs.
New Orleans, La. – Travis Henry is a young New Orleans musician with high aspirations for his art. He goes by the stage name Sei, and he's creating an audio fusion of many different genres that he hopes will shake things up for New Orleans music. But while Sei exudes confidence in his music, when it comes to the business side of his creative endeavors, he's taking a cautious, measured approach.
New Orleans, La. – Eleven-year-old Deron Magee and 13-year-old Shannon Demesme turn their canoe on a dime while paddling a City Park lagoon. Nearby, their peers Maritza Zamora and RonDeaja Craig maneuver their canoe with similar confidence. They look like seasoned pros. In fact, none of these city kids had a chance for much activity like this until they got involved with the Louisiana Outdoors Outreach Program, which everyone here calls LOOP.
New Orleans, La. – As her mother Bessie grew older, Uptown resident Anita Williams resolved to take a more active role in caring for her, eventually leaving her job to become a fulltime caregiver at her side. It's a calling based on love and devotion, but Anita admits that she, like others in similar situations, can feel overwhelmed.
Covington, LA – This weekend, two St Tammany Parish residents will be using their love of music to benefit young people in the region. Martha Carr and Jeff Faulkenstein will be producing/hosting a benefit concert by Lucy Wainwright Roche, and the group Girlyman to Benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Southeast Louisiana. New Orleans, LA – Bird-lovers all across the country will be flocking to St Tammany Parish for the Great Louisiana Birdfest, held from April 15 - 17. Jollaine Schear has more on this annual event held at the Northlake Nature Center.
New Orleans, La. – Clara Gerica and her family are familiar faces at the Crescent City Farmers Market, where they sell shrimp, finfish and soft shell crabs so fresh that sometimes the creatures are still moving in their ice-packed trays at her booth. Clara's husband Pete catches all of this in local waters, usually in Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Borgne. It's their livelihood, and also their way of life.
