New Orleans weekend sports recap: Saints finish season with a win, Pelicans split home and away

The woeful Buccaneers looked like they were going to beat the Saints on Sunday. But New Orleans came back to take the lead with just under two minutes to play. Junior Galette added a sack for a safety to seal the deal.

New Orleans finished the season with a four-game winning streak on the road.

The Saints’ 7-9 record tied their other two lows in the Sean Payton era: 2007, and 2012 — the Bountygate year.

Louisiana Tech won the Heart of Dallas Bowl on Friday.

Pelicans, Sans Davis, Hold Off Cavaliers For 119-114 Win

The New Orleans Pelicans aren’t a team known for overcoming a lot of adversity.

That perception might have to change after Friday night’s 119-114 win over the visiting Cleveland Cavaliers.

Tyreke Evans and Ryan Anderson combined for 61 points and Jrue Holiday added another 16 of his own as the Pelicans stood up to the red-hot Cavaliers at the Smoothie King Center, surmounting LeBron James' incredible 41 points and hanging on to win in front of a raucous sellout crowd.

For Anthony Davis And The Pelicans, The Time Is Brow

It’s impossible to overstate just how good Anthony Davis is.

The third-year power forward, just 21 years old, is averaging 24.9 points, 10.7 rebounds, 3.1 blocked shots and 2.3 steals through the first 16 games of the 2014-15 NBA season.

On Tuesday night he added another 25 points, 10 rebounds, 6 steals and 4 blocked shots.

The NBA is a league that rewards seasoning and, barring any injuries, Davis is just going to get better. But after next year he probably won’t be doing it in New Orleans.

The New Orleans Pelicans kicked off the NBA season with a 101-84 win over the visiting Orlando Magic.

Anthony Davis is an honest-to-goodness superstar. And he is only getting better.

Davis, now in his third year, wowed the Smoothie King Center crowd Tuesday night with another masterful performance. He was just shy of a rare triple-double — that’s double-digits in three separate categories: 26 points, 17 rebounds and 9 blocked shots. He’s the first player to record those numbers in any NBA game since Dwight Howard in 2008.

Injury-Plagued Pelicans Close Out Season With 105-100 Win Over Houston Rockets

The New Orleans Pelicans closed out the season Wednesday night with a 105-100 win over the the playoff-bound Houston Rockets in front of a raucous home crowd.

The end of the season couldn’t have come soon enough.

This inaugural season of the rebranded New Orleans Pelicans will be remembered — but more for the team’s many hiccups than the very real successes of New Orleans’ here-to-stay NBA franchise.

For every Smoothie King naming-rights deal and All-Star Game selection there was yet another season-ending injury. Or a Pierre the Pelican.
