Akili Academy has always been a school of trailers, sitting in Gentilly. Until this year. The K-8th grade charter school has opened its doors in a permanent building.

A letter asking federal officials to help speed up state Road Home money has been delivered to the New Orleans office of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Some residents are still out of their homes — almost eight years after Hurricane Katrina.
A New Orleans police officer was shot and seriously wounded this morning as he responded to a robbery at the Dollar General store in the 1100-block of Poland Avenue, near the intersection of St. Claude.
The neighborhood is currently locked down, and police have shut the St. Claude bridge in both directions. A Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office helicopter is circling overhead and SWAT teams are searching the area house-by-house, according to news reports and residents who live in the area.
Residents have been advised by police to stay inside and keep their doors locked.
A 57-year-old man was shot and killed by his wife today in the Lower 9th Ward, according to a press release issued by the New Orleans Police Department.
Police say the man's wife mistook him for an intruder, and shot him once. The man, whose name is being withheld by authorities pending the notification of his family members, was transported to a local hospital where he died.
