St. Tammany Parish Declares State Of Emergency

St. Tammany Parish has declared a state of emergency parish-wide as a preventative measure in advance of the effects of Tropical Storm Karen, the parish announced today.

Parish President Pat Brister signed the executive order declaring the emergency at 10:45 a.m.

The parish has begun implementing parts of its storm plan, but has not called for any evacuations.

Lafourche Parish Declares State Of Emergency, Issues Partial Mandatory Evacuation Order

Lafourche Parish has declared a state of emergency in advance of Tropical Storm Karen, and has issued a mandatory evacuation order for areas of the parish south of the Leon Theriot Floodgates in Golden Meadow.

The mandatory evacuation order includes Port Fourchon, and begins at 2 p.m.

The parish is bracing for the arrival of Karen, which could bring tropical storm-force winds between 25 to 60 mph, and dump up to 3 to 4 inches of rain, over the next 48 hours.

Plaquemines Parish Issues Eastbank Mandatory Evacuation Order

Plaquemines Parish has issued a mandatory evacuation order for the eastbank of the parish, and all communities on the westbank with no levee protection. The evacuation order begins at 6:00 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3.

Additionally, a voluntary evacuation order has been called for the westbank of the parish from Ironton to Venice. The Belle Chasse Auditorium will open at 6:00 p.m. as a place of shelter, but residents are advised to bring their own provisions with them.

University Of Louisiana At Lafayette Monitoring Storm

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette is planning to continue all normal operations throughout Tropical Storm Karen, the university announced today in a press release posted to its Facebook page. That includes Saturday's home football game against Texas State.

University officials say they are monitoring the storm as it develops, and will post updates if the situation changes to campus notification systems, websites, social media and other outlets.

A weakened Tropical Storm Karen, the first named system this year to threaten the U.S., still has its sights set on the Louisiana coast, but the National Hurricane Center has shifted the system's path a bit.

At 10 a.m. CDT, the storm was about 250 miles south southwest of the mouth of the Mississippi River, moving at about 10 mph with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph.

Tropical Storm Karen Stops River Traffic At Southwest Pass

Traffic at the mouth of the Mississippi stopped Friday as coastal Louisiana prepares for a possible strike by Tropical Storm Karen, which is churning in the Gulf of Mexico.

Karen is forecast to hit the northern Gulf Coast over the weekend as a weak hurricane or tropical storm. A hurricane watch was in effect from Grand Isle to west of Destin, Fla. A tropical storm warning was issued from Grand Isle to the mouth of the Pearl River, including the New Orleans area.

The NHS warns that maps such as these are subject to change based on a wide range of factors as the storm approaches. This post will be updated with new maps as the storm progresses.

Tropical Storm Karen Prompts Voluntary Evacuation For Grand Isle

The mayor of Grand Isle declared an emergency and called for voluntary evacuations as Tropical Storm Karen moved through the Gulf of Mexico.

Mayor David Camardelle's Thursday afternoon statement urged people to pick up loose items in their yards and tie down boats.

Grand Isle is an inhabited barrier island and a tourist attraction on the southeast Louisiana coast. It is often evacuated when tropical weather threatens.

Tropical Storm Karen: National Guard To Mobilize; Entergy Prepares

Louisiana's National Guard says Gov. Bobby Jindal has authorized mobilization of 650 guardsmen as Tropical Storm Karen swirls in the Gulf.

Thursday's Guard news release also says 520 Louisiana National Guard technicians are being recalled from furlough to deal with the storm.

Meanwhile, utility company Entergy has issued a statement saying it is preparing for the possibility of outages accompanying high wind, heavy rains and thunderstorms from Karen.

Gov. Jindal Declares State Of Emergency In Preparation For Tropical Storm Karen

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal declared a state of emergency Thursday after Tropical Storm Karen formed in the Gulf of Mexico and threatened to come ashore over the weekend along the Gulf coast.

The declaration authorizes the state Office and Homeland Security and other state agencies to activate emergency plans for the tropical storm's possible impact on Louisiana parishes.
